Meet The “2-Crew”: Mikey

Yup, that's me!

With the launch of the 2.0 version of Winging It In Motown, there’s also the launch of a new crew of writers, posters, malcontents, and general trouble-makers working to bring you guys content.  Today, meet Mikey.

Some of you guys know me as Mike.  Or Mikey.  Or MikeyLikeyHockey.  But I know you’re all thinking the same thing right now:  haven’t we seen this guy around here for a while?

Well… yeah.  This isn’t just WIIM’s 2.0, it’s my second time around as well.  I’ve been hanging around WIIM in some capacity for probably a decade, and took my first turn writing and podcasting from 2016 to 2019. I did some stuff that I am still insanely proud of, like the Vegas Expansion series with Peter and the Out-Of-Town Scoreboards and podcasting.  And now I’m back to do it all again.

“Why come back if you left once already” you ask?  Because it’s time to get back to something I loved doing for myself.  Because it’s hockey and the Red Wings, and even when I try to shut up about them I can’t.  Because I love connecting people and connecting with people via my ideas and opinions, and there’s no place online that fosters those connections with the level of respect and camaraderie found at WIIM.

As for why I love watching and writing about the Wings… growing up in North Carolina before the Hurricanes were a thing, the Red Wings were a way to feel connected with my extended family here in Michigan.  This was around 1995/1996, so it was easy to fall in love with the way the Wings teams of that time played.  With all the success that came after that, plus moving back to the Detroit area, my fandom has been written in stone for years.  Not that I think the organization is constantly without fault… but the Red Wings are always going to hold a special place for me and I’m always going to want to see them succeed.

When I’m not spending time and effort stressing over how the Wings can improve, I try to spend my time with family (my wife and I have two lovely, amazing, and frankly terrifying daughters) or diving into my other fandoms – namely Star Wars, Lord Of The Rings, and the Marvel Cinematic Universe (which my wife and I are WAY behind on).  But none of it quite compares to being at a game, screaming and cheering with my wife as the Wings score.

So, with all that being said, I’m looking forward to this next chapter of WIIM.  It’s going to be exciting and different and familiar and cozy and all kinds of unforseen things, but with this community I know it’s all going to be fantastic – especially as the Wings start pushing for playoff (and hopefully Stanley Cup) contention.  I’m glad to be back with this family of internet monsters.
