Jakub Kindl clears waivers, will report to AHL Affiliate Grand Rapids Griffins

DETROIT, MICH -- After being placed on waivers yesterday, Red Wings defenseman Jakub Kindl has cleared waivers, and will report to Grand Rapids.

This has been something in making for quite some time now, general manager Ken Holland claims to have been trying to move Jakub Kindl for a draft pick, but teams would only make the trade if the Red Wings would take back a roster player. Holland wasn't ready to assume the salary for another contract, so they were left with the waiver option.

One thing to keep in mind is that Kindl clearing waivers could possibly make it EASIER to trade him now on a retained salary deal. Another GM trading for Kindl could place him directly in the AHL which would give either time or space to make any moves he wants to do in regards to Kindl while also giving the Red Wings more salary relief.

Kindl's $2.4M salary through this season and next will count for $1.45M against the cap for the Red Wings while he's in Grand Rapids. For example, if the Wings were to retain even half his salary, they would be able to save $250,000 against the salary cap.
