Open Thread: Red Wings at Penguins (preseason)

Back… to back… to back… Tonight marks the midway point of a 3-games-in-3-nights stretch of the preseason. We saw the B-squad last night in Chicago, so I’m betting tonight will be the A-team out in Pittsburgh.

Time: 7:00pm

How To Watch: Be in Pittsburgh. Otherwise, listen on 97.1

I wonder… will Nate Danielson make the quick trip overnight to Pittsburgh? The Wings’ 2023 top Draft pick has gotten lots of looks this pre-season, including games with both squads, but this feels like a lot to ask of any player (let alone a kid who hasn’t played any real NHL games yet).

I’m expecting to see Larkin & Co. tonight facing off against Crosby and the other top players for the dirty ice birds. Most likely, we won’t see ND29 until tomorrow at Toronto (and, after that, hopefully at home again on the 7th against Toronto to close out the pre-season). We’ll confirm rosters as soon as they’re announced.

The keys for tonight are going to be special teams and the goalie battle. PP1 has looked good, with the addition of DeBrincat bringing extra looks and open space so far. Hopefully they can keep that humming into the regular season. In net, we still don’t have a clear answer on the back-up role. Is it Reimer? Is it Lyon? Will we carry both and cut an extra forward? The situation in Tampa is getting more and more interesting, as we noted in today’s Quick Hits.

With 3 warm-up games left, things are going to get exciting fast.

UPDATE 11:52am: Expected lines from Max Bultman. Doesn’t look like ND29 will be in tonight, but we don’t have tonight’s official lineup from the Wings yet sooooo….
