Quick Hits: Howe Improving; Voynov Charged

Red Wings News

Red Wings 4, Jets 3: Tomas Tatar snaps tie late with second goal of game as Detroit storms back | MLive.com
If last night taught us anything, it is to never give up. It was a hard-fought victory against a pretty decent opponent. In his last four games, Tatar has four goals and six points. Keep it up!

‘No walking, no speech,” but Gordie Howe showing small improvement | Detroit Free Press
Yes! Mr. Hockey is making progress! Get well Gordie!

Andrej Nestrasil claimed by Carolina Hurricanes on waivers from Detroit Red Wings | MLive.com
I was never a huge fan of Nestrasil. I was impressed by the fact that he was able to make the roster out of camp, but, to me, he was nothing more than another Emmerton or Mursak. I may have wanted the Wings to waive Cleary instead of him, but, let’s face it, that is not happening. I would much rather have a potentially productive Weiss on the roster than Nestrasil. And then there is also the possibility of a certain Anthony Mantha making his Wings’ debut.

Xavier Ouellet wants to be ‘reliable’ for Red Wings | Detroit Free Press
I do not know what is going on with Kindl at the moment. Regardless, I hope that Ouellet is up with the Wings for the long-haul. If nothing else, he is an immediate upgrade over Lashoff and Kindl.

Slava Voynov charged with felony for ‘corporal injury to spouse with great bodily injury’ | Puck Daddy
What probably should have happened at the time of the incident has now occurred. Whether Voynov is guilty or not is not for me to determine. But, I think it is fair to conclude that he inflicted some form of bodily harm on his wife. Also, the comment made by Voynov’s wife’s lawyer at the end of this article is interesting.

NHL responds to concussion lawsuit, says players should have ‘put two and two together’ | ProHockeyTalk
I do not know about you, but that is not the type of comment that would please me if I was a former player. Sure, the players may have been able to make a connection between hard hits and debilitating brain injuries, but, if the players would have been able to do that, then the NHL should have also done more on their own part. A very weak response by the NHL.

NHL player files for bankruptcy after parents borrow $15 million in his name | For The Win
Jack Johnson has filed for bankruptcy. This is really terrible, and while I am confident that he can recover financially, I hope that he is able to recover emotionally. Considering the circumstances, this could not have been easy.

Habs swap Rene Bourque for Ducks’ Bryan Allen in deal of 30-somethings | Puck Daddy
The Canadiens and Ducks swapped a pair of old depth players who could both use a change of scenery. Especially Bourque, who was demoted to the AHL a few weeks ago.

Lisa Marvin was filing up her truck on the side of the road when the truck was hit from behind, launching her into the air.

NHL postpones Rangers-Sabres due to ‘weather-related difficulties’ | ProHockeyTalk
The Buffalo area has been hit hard by snow these last few days. The NFL game between the Bills and the Jets has been moved to Ford Field on Monday night.

NHL Report Card: Grades for first quarter of the 2014-15 season – CBSSports.com
The Wings’ were given a grade of “B”, which I think is a pretty fair grade to our young season. For the most part, I have been very pleased by the Wings’ early-season play, but, there have been a couple of losses (Senators, Sabres, etc…) that should not have happened. The Sabres and Oilers were the only teams in the NHL given an “F” grade.

Jake Gardiner gifted a goal to the Lightning – SBNation.com
The Maple Leafs‘ great season continues (in all fairness, the Leafs actually won last night).

Welcome Dion Phaneuf to the trade rumor mill | ProHockeyTalk
I have never viewed Phaneuf as a #1 defenseman, and certainly not as an elite one. If the Leafs are actually considering a rebuild, or at least a retooling phase, then Phaneuf should be one of the first players to go.

NHL Awards: Rinne, Giordano stake claims to 2014-15 hardware – CBSSports.com
No Wings’ players in these early awards predictions. How about Mark Giordano and the season that he has been having? Pretty impressive.

4-D gadget shakes your couch so you feel the hits while you watch hockey | The Hockey News
If someone could actually develop a reliable product that did this, I would be interested in buying it.
