Quick Hits around the NHL – Mar 9 Edition

  • Mrs. Hockey passed away on Friday at the age of 76. The Detroit News has a list of funeral arranagements that will be held for Colleen Howe. Jerry Green, a columnist for The Detroit News, has a column about Mrs. Hockey’s life and career.
  • Some Detroit Red Wings alumni, including color commentator Mickey Redmond, played in a charity game benefiting Dearborn Firefighters Burn Drive and Dearborn police charities on Saturday. Wings’ defenseman Chris Chelios signed autographs before the game.
  • BizJournals compiled a list of the best (and worst) sports organizations in 2008 based simply on winnings and money made. The Detroit Red Wings came in at #7. The only other NHL team to rank higher was the Montreal Canadiens (4). What bugged me was that the Detroit Pistons were ranked #6 even though the Wings won the Cup. Oh well. Our lovely Detroit Lions came in dead last at #122.
  • A fantastic article about Wings’ prospect Ville Leino being a Renaissance Man — he enjoys the finer things in life like art, classical music, etc. The piece also says that he’s learning how to play guitar and his attempts have been recorded and played in front of the Grand Rapids Griffins fans on the Van Andel Arena jumbotron.
  • NBC and Versus will broadcast the same number of Stanley Cup Finals games this year as they did last season, but the order will be a bit different. Instead of showing the first two games, Versus will broadcast Games 3 and 4. NBC will televise Games 1, 2, 5, 6, and 7. The argument is that having the first two games of the Finals on cable limited the pool of people who started watching the series.
  • Jonathan Ericsson will likely be sent back to Grand Rapids this week, but his stint in Detroit impressed the coaching staff and teammates according to The Detroit News.
  • The Wings are working on their defense after allowing eight goals for the second time in a week. Both MLive.com and The Detroit News discussed this issue.
  • Chris Osgood told the Detroit Free Press that the Wings’ fans were justified in booing the Wings at home. Fan favorite Aaron Downey continues to impart his potato farmer wisdom with this latest nugget:/

“A friend of mine once said ‘You’ve gotta take (crap) and make it into manure.’ What happens with manure, you can fertilize it and things will grow again.”
