Alex Lyon’s Journey to the NHL: Cotsonika

Alex Lyon’s path to becoming an NHL starter is one of the better stories documented over the last few years. NHL dot com’s Nick Cotsonika penned a nice background story on Lyon’s development, his hometown, and what he’s done to change his trajectory:

“No man is an island, not even a goalie. But Alex Lyon grew up on an island, and that’s just part of his backstory.

He once took a boat to a one-room schoolhouse, yet he made it to Yale. He made 94 saves in a 2-1 five-overtime victory in the longest game in American Hockey League history. Twice in two seasons now, amid injury situations, he has seized an opportunity to make an impact as a third-string goalie in the NHL,” Cotsinika wrote.

Griffins extend point streak, tie franchise record

The Griffins lost in a shootout decision last night, but don’t let the L get in the way of what is happening in Grand Rapids this season. The Griffs are currently on a 10-game winning streak, which tied a franchise record. That’s largely thanks to magnificent play from some of Detroit’s most-coveted prospects, including Carter Mazur, William Wallinder, Amadeus Lombardi, Antti Tuomisto, and the list goes on. The future is still bright.

Rielly suspended five games for cross-check

No surprise here, but Morgan Rielly will be sidelined for five games as a result of his cross-check to Ridly Greig after his slap-shot empty-net goal. DoPS had no choice but to throw the book at him for this nasty hit.

Phil Kessel eyes return to NHL

Phil!!

Sounds like Phil Kessel will make his return to NHL action soon, most likely with Vancouver. I’ve always been a fan of the Kessel family, and it’s good to see the 36-year-old winger back in the mix, no matter which team.
