It’s over. It’s done.
After an agonizing standoff between Steve Yzerman, Pierre Dorion, Alex Debrincat and his agent – a deal is done. The Wings will get Debrincat in exchange for Dominik Kubalik, Donovan Sebrango, a conditional 2024 1st round pick and a 4th-rounder in 2024:
Shortly after the trade was announced, the Wings signed Debrincat to a four-year extension at $7.8 million AAV:
The condition on the 2024 1st round pick is as follows: The Wings have the option of sending their own 2024 1st-round pick or Boston’s 2024 1st-round pick to Ottawa. However, if the Bruins’ pick is in the top-10, Boston will have the option of retaining the pick and transferring its 2024 unprotected first-round selection to Detroit. The Wings then will have the option of sending that pick or their own 1st-round pick in 2024 to the Senators.
The Spin
This is tidy work from Steve Yzerman. Debrincat has shown that he can be a scoring machine (two 40-goal seasons under his belt), and it came at a price that is easy enough to digest. The expectation was that Debrincat would get an eight-year extension but instead gets a term that is again, much easier to digest.
This is a home-run deal for Steve Yzerman. Tough to see Kubalik go, but the addition of Debrincat cannot be understated. If Detroit can get him back to his 40-goal-scoring ways then it would be a monumental building block… And maybe even push the team into contention next season.
