Red Wings Top 25 Under 25: Dominic Turgeon skates in at 18

The Vitals

Position: Center
Shoots: Left
Born: 2/25/96
Birthplace: Pointe-Claire, Quebec
Drafted: 2014, 3rd Round, 63rd pick overall
Current Team: Grand Rapids Griffins, AHL
2017-2018 statline: 74 GP (5 w/Detroit), 14 goals (0 w/Detroit), 18 assists (0 w/Detroit)

Dominic Turgeon came into the 2017-18 season a little under the radar in terms of Red Wings prospects after an ok 2016-17 season (6G/12A in 71 games, 1G/1A in 19 playoff games). Last season he found himself with a more prominent role in Grand Rapids and rewarded that faith with a big jump in productivity, finishing the season 14 goals/18 assists in 69 games with the Griffins and even earning himself a five-game cup of coffee with the Red Wings in January. While he did not play a ton while up with the Wings (averaging 9:38 in ice time) and did not register a point, Turgeon did not look completely out of place or overmatched either. While he is mainly seen as a defensive forward, Dominic does posses some offensive punch as well…as you would expect from the son of Pierre Turgeon.

Unfortunately, Dominic would see his season end on a bit of a down note however after being diagnosis with thoracic outlet syndrome in early April and undergoing surgery to correct the issue shortly after, effectively ending his season.

Dominic Turgeon Out Indefinitely

I think Turgeon is probably ranked right about where he should be right now at 18. All indications are that he will be ready to go for the start of training camp. Barring something crazy or catastrophic, Turgeon will start the season with Grand Rapids where he will be likely be leaned on even more this season as both a player and a leader with the departure of several veterans from the Griffins. He will also likely serve as the first call ups for the Red Wings when/if injuries or trades open up a center spot. Long term Turgeon looks like he could be a solid depth center for the Red Wings who could provide some secondary offense at the bottom of the roster while playing that 200-foot game the Red Wings love from them centers. That said, with the Red Wings recent additions at center and the upcoming draft deep at the pivot as well, Turgeon will need to continue to improve or risk being lost in the shuffle.

Do you agree with Dominic Turgeon ranking at 18?

Yep, that’s about right 313
No, he should be higher 72
No, he should be lower 127
