Red Wings Recall Jared Coreau, Place Jimmy Howard on Injured Reserve

DETROIT, MICH — The Red Wings have announced the recall of goaltender Jared Coreau on Wednesday morning. Additionally, the Wings have placed Jimmy Howard on injured reserve after sustaining an injury in Tuesday’s game against the Tampa Bay Lightning. More on the injury as the story develops, but here’s a look at how it unfolded:

It’s uncertain how long Howard will be sidelined, but his reaction from the sequence hints that it could be lengthy. Howard had to be helped off of the ice and down the tunnel before backup goaltender Petr Mrazek took over the net in a 4-1 thrashing at Amalie Arena.

This is no doubt a frustrating development for not only the Red Wings, who have been strong in the underachievement category, but Jimmy Howard, who has been having an extremely impressive bounce-back season. The team will now look for Petr Mrazek to assume the starting role going forward. If Howard is out longterm, we will be seeing more of Jared Coreau.

More from the Red Wings:

The Detroit Red Wings today recalled goaltender Jared Coreau from the American Hockey League’s Grand Rapids Griffins and placed goaltender Jimmy Howard on seven-day injured reserve.

Coreau made his NHL debut with Detroit on Dec. 3 at Pittsburgh, making 32 saves in the Red Wings’ 5-3 loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins. The 25-year-old has also played 17 games with the Griffins and currently ranks among the top AHL netminders with 11 wins (T3rd), a 2.18 goals-against average (T10th) and a 0.924 save percentage (T9th). In his four professional seasons, Coreau has logged a 56-33-3 record with a 2.39 goals-against average, 0.922 save percentage and 10 shutouts. He enjoyed his best AHL season in 2015-16, winning a career-best 29 games with a 2.43 goals-against average, 0.922 save percentage and six shutouts in 47 games.

A native of Perth, Ontario, the 6-foot-6, 220-lb., goaltender spent three seasons at Northern Michigan University in the CCHA prior to signing with the Red Wings after the 2012-13 season. In 76 games with the Wildcats, he accumulated a 32-31-8 record, 2.72 goals-against average, 0.919 save percentage and two shutouts. Coreau also spent one season with the Lincoln Stars in the USHL prior to his collegiate career, posting a 3.62 goals-against average and a 0.882 save percentage in 38 games with the team during the 2009-10 campaign.
