An offensive blueliner, he is a smooth skater with great mobility. He skates backward very well and also pivots nicely to aid his transition either offensively or defensively. He rarely needs to go at top speed, but when he requires a high gear he can find it. That lateral movement and agility help him close gaps very quickly. Offensively, he has the ability to keep control of the puck. He protects it well when he has to. And, in a pinch, he can move pucks quickly and effectively with short passes that find the target nine out of 10 times – and he does that while in full flight. His reputation is that he makes good choices when moving up ice with the puck. He doesn’t attack with a lot of aggression, but he knows his way around the offensive zone. Makes up his mind in a blink and doesn’t hesitate to get himself in position to make a play or unleash a shot. He’s not the most physical player. Rather, he relies on taking a good angle at attackers and forcing them to lose control of the puck with good stickwork. Defensively, the Truro, N.S., native is stable. However, he has a tendency to roll out of position the longer he and his teammates are hemmed in under fire. McIsaac is elite is no one area – he doesn’t have the instincts of Erik Karlsson nor the physical presence or shot of Shea Weber – but he’s capable in many facets out on the ice. – Future Considerations
Analyzing the pick
The Red Wings continue knocking these picks out of the park by taking the Halifax Mooseheads rearguard. I, like many others, was thinking we would take Bode Wilde here, but this is a great pick. Great skater, and like it says above, he’s a well-rounded defenseman.
Assuming Detroit doesn’t trade to get back into the second round, I think the first four picks are an unqualified success. Yes, there were other options that people may have preferred, but in total, we made four great picks and acquired four players who have a great chance to contribute to the Red Wings in the future.
