Steve Yzerman is bringing a former Maple Leaf on board. Former second-round pick Justin Holl is getting a three-year contract with an AAV of $3.4 million.
Holl has 285 NHL games under his belt but the numbers on offense are nothing to write home about. The 31-year-old Minnesota product scored 18 points in 80 games for the Leafs last season, and only managed one point in eight playoff games. He will fill a key need for the Wings – a steady right-hand shot that can slot in bottom-pair duty. He’ll kill penalties, play defense and chip in on offense here and there. Overall, just an average player at the very best.
I would guess that Holl could be paired with Olli Maatta, who has been a solid pickup for the Wings. Funny that Maatta will be paid less than Holl. I don’t think a pairing of Ben Chiarot-Justin Holl is something I’d like to see.
