Red Wings sign Filip Hronek to 3-year extension

The last of the “big name” RFAs is back in the fold.

With Hronek having his ELC slide for the first two years, he won’t qualify for unrestricted free agency when this deal expires, being about five months too young for that. He will have arbitration rights the next time around though, but the length of the deal is a big win for Detroit

Hronek was far and away Detroit’s leading minute munched for blueliners, leading the entire team in points with 26 (24 assists and 2 empty netters). Ultimately he would benefit from not being given top duty responsibilities,  as he’s faded in that role in recent seasons, but if the depth allows,  2nd pairing is a great spot.

With Hronek signed, Detroit has 21 players against the 23-person limit (assuming Wyatt Newcomer won’t make the cut).  That number includes seven defenseman but not Moritz Seider.  Expect further roster shuffling in camp,  but Hronek will be a heavy favorite to be among the top six opening night defenseman

As of posting, the AAV is unknown.  We will update when that becomes available.
