Red Wings Swedish prospect Christoffer Ehn leaves Frolunda to join Griffins

DETROIT, Mich — Red Wings prospect and former 2012 4th-round pick Christoffer Ehn hopped on a plane to join the Grand Rapids Griffins earlier today, Frolunda’s website confirms.

The 21-year-old center made great strides in the SHL this year, putting up 13 points (4-9-13) in 52 games, including two points (1-1-2) in the 14 playoff appearances.

A rough translation from Frolunda’s website:

Christoffer Ehn flew on Tuesday to the United States and play the rest of the season with the Detroit Red Wings farm team Grand Rapids Griffins. Jacob Larsson connect week to the Anaheim Ducks organization.

Ehn doesn’t have gaudy numbers, and that’s due to the type of player he is. He was used as a shutdown center for his SHL club — a specialty bottom-six role. Ehn’s team was responsible for ousting Axel Holmstrom’s team in the first round of the SHL playoffs, and now the two will team up to help the Griffins make a push into the Calder  Cup Playoffs.

I know a couple of people, one of which working with an SHL club as an analytical mind, have sung praises for Ehn in the role he’s played. A strong-skating, responsible and stout centerman with a gift to make good plays in the neutral zone.

Ehn’s current contract in Frolunda takes him to April of 2019, so he is likely to play one more season in the SHL, developing in a hopefully increased role. Despite that, he should be available on Friday when the Griffins begin their first-round matchup against the Milwaukee Admirals.
