The Red Wings have done what we all thought they were going to do by waiving Ty Conklin with the intention of sending him to Grand Rapids. Joey MacDonald will stay with the Wings and serve as the back up to Jimmy Howard for the rest of the season.
This is a move that makes perfect sense. Conklin has not been good at all this season, and whether that’s due to lack of goal support or his poor play, he does not give the Wings the chance to win that MacDonald provides. Joey Mac has been nothing short of spectacular since taking over after the first period against Edmonton, compiling a 6-1-1 record with a .934 SV% and 1.66 GAA.
Conklin will remain on waivers for the next 24 hours, and if no one claims him, he will be sent to Grand Rapids where he’ll likely take over as the #1 goalie for the Griffins. It’s a shame that his season with the Wings had to end this way, but when given an opportunity to hold the fort with Howard injured, Conklin couldn’t get the job done.
(s/t to The Production Line for being on top of this throughout the entire process).
