Report: Jeff Blashill to be named as Red Wings Head Coach Next Week

DETROIT, MICH — Are you surprised? While it’s not confirmed, Ansar Khan of MLive has reported that the Detroit Red Wings will name Griffins head coach Jeff Blashill as the replacement for Mike Babcock:

The Red Wings will announce Blashill’s hiring during a press conference next week at Joe Louis Arena, a source said.

Blashill, 41, will become the second-youngest head coach in the NHL, behind recently hired John Hynes of the New Jersey Devils, who is 40.

Blashill likely will receive a three-year contract, since general manager Ken Holland has three years remaining on his deal.

While it’s not surprising, it’s surely exciting. A new era of the Detroit Red Wings is upon us after a decade with Mike Babcock as the bench boss. The former AHL coach of the year posted a record of 134-71-23 during his three year tenure with the Red Wings affiliate, and brought home one Calder Cup championship with many of the players who have graduated to the NHL over the past two years.

As I said before, nothing has been confirmed, but it’s all but a done deal as of now. We will post more news as it becomes available. Get excited, Red Wings faithful. The Blashill era is about to begin.
