Win Streak Trashed: Isles 5 – Wings 3

Credit: Rick Osentoski-USA TODAY Sports

First game with the jersey patches. Pain.

First Period

Wings have not scored in the first three minutes. Instead, they get a Too Much Man penalty and Perron goes in the Bad Boy Boy for the bench minor. Lyon is keeping busy and kills the penalty. Shots are 5-0 Isles. Ice remains tilted in the Isles favor until Pulock gets called for the hi-stick. Unintentional, but good enough to be a penalty and he goes to the Crimes Cabana. Wings record their first SOG only took them 9 minutes!!! Nothing else happens.

Wings penalty killed but now it’s back to the penalty kill! Chiarot in the Degen Den for tripping. Wings play keep away to kill the first half of the penalty, they weren’t going to dump the puck until the Isles made them. Very lackluster powerplay from the Isles.

Chiarot gets the puck stolen away in front of the net and there wasn’t anything Lyon could have done but got lucky. Nelson makes it 1-0 Isles with 8 minutes left.

Wings fans channel their energy into booing until they have something to cheer about. Two disagreements with officiating inside LCA so far.

2-0 Isles. Pelech takes a long shot that’s deflected by Cizikas into the net. Another one Lyon had no chance on. They’re looking it over to see if it was a high stick. On the replay angles, it looked fine but The Situation Room wants a longer look. And can confirm, good goal. Which is bad for us.

Wings get a chance to end the period with some life as Clutterbuck is in the Goon Garden for hooking against Raymond. Time for another Rrrrred Wings powerplay! Last second scramble in the goal crease but couldn’t solve Sorokin who has been excellent.

Recap of the recap: Wings badly outplayed.

Second Period

Wings are off to a better start the first five minutes but Sorokin has been annoying good in the Isles net. But finally the unsolvable is solved by the player everyone most suspected…Maatta! 2-1 Isles.

Fischer down the tunnel after taking a puck in the wrist needing some time and space to get the feeling back in his hand and can make the necessary unflattering grimaces in peace. He finds his way back to the bench looks good to go.

Halfway through, Wings fans boo again as Kane gets tripped up. Shots even 13-13.

Sorokin turns the puck over behind the net to Veleno who does his Datsyuk bounce off the back of the net impression but it doesn’t end in a goal. Gives a great effort though and sparks some energy.

And…that’s pretty much it. Engvall does the half-hearted end-of-period chip but the puck ends up hitting Petry. If it was any other player they might have fought about it but everybody just shrugged and skated off.

Recap of the recap: Better be a third period team.

Third Period

BRRRRRRRRR THERE GOES THE HORN IT’S A TIE GAME. Who else? Kane. 10 seconds.

Isles are getting another chance at the powerplay as Fischer gets thrown in the Assailant Aquarium for hooking. Penalty kill time! The penalty is not killed. Nelson gets his second goal. 3-2 Isles. Every time the Wings get something going it seems like an Isles player is able to get a stick in the way and the puck never settles. The penalty calling has been…interesting as well. Tripping is not a thing a lot of the time apparently.

The Wings spent two shifts in the Isles zone but they just could not get it cleared and eventually the Wings made them pay for it. Maatta again and there’s an octopus on the ice! Tie game! The whole energy has changed and the Wings are feeling it.

Raymond tripped and Ras cross-checked in a single breath. No calls.

A stupid goal scored by the Isles. Chaos in the crease and Lyon can’t find the puck, ends up knocking it in himself when he turns to look. 4-3 Isles with 6 minutes to go. Lyon isn’t having a bad game but he’s just a little off and that’s all it takes.

Ras tripped again. No penalty. That’s the fourth or fifth time for him this game.

2 minutes to go.

1:30 and Lyon to the bench.

30 seconds empty net goal will end it.

5-3 Isles.
