Game Preview
While everything looked real grim in the season opener on Thursday night, I kept reminding myself that this does not mean the sky is falling. In some ways it reminded me of the last shortened season, the 2013 season opener against St. Louis on January 19th. The Wings went on to lose that game 6-0. It was the ugliest I’d ever seen Detroit play. Prognosticators said this was the end of the Red Wings; they were now doomed to be basement feeders. It was written in the stars! After all, Lidstrom had just retired after an unceremonious expulsion in five games against Nashville the previous season. It was a total humiliation to start Zetterberg’s captaincy.
Two weeks later, this happened. I’m not saying that’s what’s going to happen tonight or anything, but there’s a new captain and last season was a failure but relative standards, and yet it doesn’t mean the team is doomed. Let’s see what happens before getting our feathers too ruffled.
Based on how the team practiced yesterday, it looks like Bobby Ryan will make his Red Wings’ debut in the place of Frans Nielsen. Carolina’s Jordan Staal was also announced to be in the NHL’s COVID protocol. Keep an eye out for our GDU later today for more info on how the lineups shake out.
