Preseason Game Recap: Red Wings 5 Maple Leafs 2

The Red Wings iced a nearly full NHL roster tonight against the Leafs tonight, and came away with a 5-2 win on the strength of 3 (yes I said 3) power play goals. At the risk of stating the obvious, having Zetterberg, Datsyuk, and Abdelkader playing makes this a whole different team. They play like the top line and do their thing, they make everyone else on the team better, and allow the other lines to be where they need to be. Oh yeah, and they’re pretty good at the hockey thing too. The Zetterberg PP goal from Datsyuk and Franzen was a thing of beauty.

Tonight we got a goal from the 4th line, a goal from the 3rd line, and 3 goals from the #1 PP unit. 5 goals, 5 different goal scorers, and 9 players receiving assists (Datsyuk is the only player who received more than 1 assist). If we can continue to get that kind of production sharing from the players and lines, we won’t have to rely on Datsyuk and Zetterberg to carry this team. Let the depth shine boys!

Weiss left the game in the 3rd period with a sore groin, but it’s reportedly only precautionary and nothing serious.

There’s only one preseason game left, and hopefully the Wings will get a little momentum going as they roll into the real season.
