Quick Hits: The Disappointing Draft Edition

In Red Wings Land

Detroit Red Wings have a question mark, many misses from 2015 NHL draft | Freep

First-round review: Forward Brock Boeser was available when the Wings picked, and Vancouver snapped him up at 23rd overall. Boeser was a finalist for the Calder trophy (rookie of the year) in 2018 after producing 29 goals among 55 points 62 games for the Canucks, and follow up with 26 goals among 56 points in 2018-19. Forward Travis Konecny (24th, Philadelphia) has put together back-to-back 24-goal seasons for the Flyers. The Wings could also have had forward Colin White (21st, Ottawa) who scored 14 goals among 41 points for the Senators in 2018-19.

We still don’t know what kind of player Evgeny Svechnikov will become, but my expectations are extremely low. This was NOT a good draft for the Red Wings.

Injuries leave Sharks sputtering against Blues | ESPN

There was the 5-0 final score, as lopsided in the final math as it appeared on the ice, with the Blues controlling play from the second period onward to take a 3-2 series lead in the Western Conference Finals. But more distressingly for San Jose, there were a parade of injuries that left the Sharks without key players Tomas Hertl, Joe Pavelski and Erik Karlsson in the third period, thwarting any hope of a rally.

This sucks on two levels:

  1. The Sharks (eventually) losing the series means we have to wait and see if Gus Nyquist re-signs in San Jose in order for the Wings to get a 3rd round pick upgraded to the 2nd round in 2020.
  2. I’m going to actually have to root for the Blues to beat the Bruins and win the Stanley Cup. They’re the lesser of two evils… but still gross.
