Red Wings Rumblings
Before we get into anything, let’s relive Ken Daniels’ amazing call of Lucas Raymond’s game-tying goal with 12 seconds left in last night’s game to send it to OT:
Red Wings sign Carter Gylander to ELC
The Wings announced before yesterday’s win that they have inked 2019 seventh-round pick Carter Gylander to a two-year entry-level contract. The 22-year-old just finished up his senior season at Colgate University, and led his team to its first conference title since 1990. Gylander will join the Griffins, perhaps even the Walleye. Wouldn’t expect much playing time right now, but you never know. One injury can change a lot.
It was an EARLY start for the Griffins in Winnipeg yesterday, and boy you can tell. Michael Hutchinson got the start, and we should expect Sebastian Cossa to get the start tonight for their second leg of a back-to-back with Manitoba.
NHL News
Former NHLer and Stanley Cup Champ Chris Simon dies at 52
Old-time Wings fans will remember Simon well. He appeared in 75 Stanley Cup Playoff games and was a part of the 1996 Colorado Avalanche that won a Cup. Here’s a tidbit from Joe Sakic, a former teammate:
“‘Chris was a great guy, a beloved teammate and an important part of our first championship season,” Avalanche president and former teammate Joe Sakic said in a statement. “He was a really good hockey player who could score goals, was a big presence in the dressing room and was the first person to stand up and defend his teammates. Off the ice he was an unbelievable guy and a caring father, son, brother and friend. He will be sorely missed.'”
According to a statement from Simon’s family, he died by suicide and struggled “immensely” from CTE. The sobering news came not long after former NHLer Konstantin Koltsov died by apparent suicide.
Plenty of news coming out of the NHL’s general managers meetings this week. That includes a new coach challenge to allow a review if a puck hit something when it goes over the glass.
