The Red Wings start day two of NHL free agency by adding another forward with a big frame. The team announced Sunday morning that Christian Fischer is getting a one-year deal worth $1.125 million.
Fischer, who just turned 26 in April, is a six-foot-two 214-pound winger/center with a right-hand shot. The Chicago native has spent the last six seasons with the Arizona Coyotes where he most recently played the role of third-line RW. Fischer fits the ‘power forward’ mold but offense isn’t his most valuable asset. I would guess that Detroit will peg him as a bottom-six bell cow that can be a vital part to the PK unit.
Not the sexiest of signings, but we know the Wings have put emphasis on being tougher to play against. He usually played around 15 minutes a night in Arizona and I would guess he will get the same ice time in Detroit, if not a little less.
This has been a busy free agency for Steve Yzerman. With nine signings so far, the team is going to look A LOT different on opening night – but the work isn’t done yet. There are a ton of players on the roster currently. I would think a trade could still be on the cards.
